Massage therapy can do wonders for healing the body and mind, helping you recover from injuries and manage chronic pain. You can get the most out of each appointment if you know what to do and what to avoid. Follow the guide below when you schedule your first appointment.

Do:

Communicate your preferences.

If your chiropractor is treating you, it’s likely they’re already aware of which areas they need to target. However, you can tell them about any other preferences you have for your massage therapy. If something is painful or you want them to adjust their pressure, say so. This helps keep you more comfortable during the session while providing optimized, long-term results.

chiropractorDrink water afterward.

First-timers often find that their muscles are unusually sore in the days following their appointment. Drinking plenty of water after the appointment minimizes tenderness. The massage works toxins out of your muscles, and the water will flush them out for healthier and more comfortable muscles.

Don’t:

Show up late.

Your therapist has a busy schedule. If you’re late for an appointment, they likely won’t be able to keep you later to make up for lost time. You won’t get nearly as much out of your appointment if they can’t work an area for as long as they need to. Arrive 10 minutes early so that you have time to settle in and don’t arrive stressed.

Leave your cellphone on.

A cellphone is only a distraction during massage therapy. Turn it off completely so that a ringtone or a vibration doesn’t disrupt you. During the appointment, focus on nothing other than relaxing and letting the chiropractor work their magic.
