If you’re on-the-go like many other people, microwaves offer convenience. They save you time with quick, 1-minute buttons and thawing options. They even have settings for particular foods. Although they’re advantageous and seem advanced, there are still products that can’t go in the microwave because they may cause injuries and the need for appliance repair. Understand what you should, and shouldn’t microwave to prevent an accident.

Don’t Put These Commodities In a Microwave

1. Whole Eggs

appliance repairYou may be able to cook eggs in a microwave, but not if they’re in their shells. Because microwaves heat quickly, they can cause a rapid buildup of steam inside the egg. If the pressure from the steam becomes too much for the shell, the egg will explode. If you want to cook an egg inside the microwave, you need to puncture the shell before heating to release the steam. However, it is better to make hard-boiled eggs in water over the stove.

2. Styrofoam Containers

Styrofoam is made of soft plastic called polystyrene foam. A typical, household microwave reaches from 150 degrees to 500 degrees, depending on its current power setting, and these high temperatures can cause the styrofoam to decompose. Breakdown can cause toxic chemicals to transfer to food. Instead of reheating these containers, transfer the food to a glass or ceramic dish.

3. Metal Products

Microwaves generate heat using electromagnetic radiation, which is varying electric and magnetic fields. Food absorbs the energy, but metal doesn’t because it’s conductive. It can produce small lightning bolts and fires. Keep utensils and ceramic, metal trim dishes out of the machine. Also, avoid cooking items with aluminum or metallic fast-food wrapping.
