Oral cancer is one of the more overlooked forms of cancer and an issue many people will face. It often manifests unnoticed because people forego screenings. This makes treatment more difficult. Identifying risk factors can help you reduce your chances of developing it, so schedule a screening with your dentist if the following applies to you.

Risk Factors of Oral Cancer

1. Alcoholism

Studies show that heavy alcohol use can increase your risk of head, neck, and oral cancers. This includes drinking wine, beer, or liquor. This is due to the presence of ethanol, production of acetaldehyde when digestive alcohol, and an increase of estrogen in the blood. Alcoholism may also impair the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Collectively these lead to weaker cells that are less resistant to cancer.

2. Tobacco Use

dentistOne of the most well-known causes of oral cancer is tobacco use. Whether it’s chewing tobacco, cigarettes, or cigars, these account for 85% of oral cancer cases. When combined with heavy alcohol use, a person’s likelihood of developing oral cancer can increase to almost 100%. Take steps to quit today and schedule regular oral cancer screenings with your dentist if you have a history of smoking.

3. Sun Exposure

Oral cancer includes cancers of the lip. Similar to skin cancer, this often comes from extensive UV radiation. If you work outdoors, make sure to always wear at least an SPF 30 sunscreen on your lips and around your mouth. There are UV-deflecting lip balms that are easy to apply and at water-resistant.
