There are between 17 and 35 million surfers worldwide, and taking surf lessons is an item on many bucket lists. This is an exciting sport, and if you’re on the fence about giving it a try, consider some of these compelling reasons.

Why You Should Take Surf Lessons

1. Workout the Body

Taking surf lessons is a fun supplement to going to the gym since it requires several muscle groups. The arms, shoulders, back, and outer core muscles help you paddle, and when you’re ready to catch a wave, you’ll activate the muscles in your upper body to push up. The muscles in your lower body and core will help you stay on the board. Once you advance, the hip muscles will be used to execute tricks.

2. Improve Sleep

If you experience this condition, surfing can help as exercise positively affects sleep. Regular physical activity will help you fall asleep quickly and sleep better and longer. Since Hawaii is surrounded by the ocean, simply head to the beach after work for some surf lessons for a convenient way to improve your sleep cycle. On the weekends, rent a board and hit the water before lunch.

3. Tan Healthily

Many people desire a sun-kissed look, and head to a tanning salon to get even coloring. However, tanning beds emit about 12 times the amount of UVA light than natural sunlight, which can heighten your risk of melanoma and skin cancer. Fortunately, surfing can grant your skin a sun-kissed hue easily and safely. The sand and ocean reflect sunlight, allowing you to get an even color, and the cool water will prevent you from feeling too hot as you soak in the sun. To tan safely, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it liberally, reapplying every two hours to ensure coverage. Opt for a water-resistant formula since you’ll be catching waves during your surf lesson.
