1. Thaw Your Air Conditioning Unit

The first step is to sufficiently thaw your AC unit. Switch your thermostat from the cool setting to the fan setting and wait. If your AC coils are significantly frozen, it may take a few hours for a complete thaw. Before doing this, make sure the condensate pan is in good working order. This is where moisture from the unit accumulates. Thawing your unit is also important if you need to schedule service, as your repair tech won’t be able to do much when it’s frozen. 

2. Check the Air Filter

The air filter plays an integral role when it comes to the operation of your air conditioner. A dirty air filter prevents the flow of warm air over the coils, which can lead to freezing. If the air filter’s even slightly dirty, it’s best to just replace it. In the future, make sure you’re checking the air filter on a regular basis to prevent it from becoming too soiled. The more you use the unit, the more you should replace the filter, though once a season is a general recommendation.

3. Turn the Unit Back On
