Cavities are one of the most common oral health issues, and the most common solution is fillings. It’s a simple procedure that will preserve your child’s smile, and if they have an upcoming appointment, there can be a lot of questions. Here’s what you need to know to prepare them and ease anxiety.

What Are Fillings?

When tooth decay breaks through the enamel and eats into a tooth, it weakens the tooth’s surface. This can lead to collapse, and a cavity is formed. A dentist will use fillings to close the cavity and prevent decay-causing bacteria from attacking the tooth’s root canal system and spreading the infection. Fillings can be made of amalgam silver, composite resin, plastic, and gold. These are highly durable and easy to administer.

What’s the Procedure Like?

fillingFirst, the dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. They’ll then clear damaged enamel and debris from the rotten area and clean it. If the nerve is exposed, they’ll cover it. The cavity will then be filled with the material, and an ultraviolet light will cure it. The procedure takes roughly one hour, and there is little discomfort.

What Is the Aftercare Like?

Dental fillings can last 10 to 15 years with proper care. Have your child avoid chewing on the treated tooth for several hours after the procedure. Going forward, they’ll need to avoid chewing hard and sticky foods and nonedible objects with the tooth, as the filling can come loose. Prevent future decay by having them brush and floss twice a day, limiting sugary and acidic foods, and seeing their dentist twice a year for a cleaning and exam.
