Storage units are designed to keep your items secure. However, any excess moisture can leave the unit smelling like mildew. Use these simple tips to keep your self-storage unit and possessions smelling as fresh as possible.

How to Prevent a Mildew Smell in Your Self-Storage Unit

1. Thoroughly Dry Your Items

Take the time to wipe down all of your objects and appliances before placing them in the unit. For example, thoroughly dry the inside of your dishwasher and kitchen appliances after you’ve cleaned them out.

2. Store Items Securely

3. Use a Dehumidifier

If you’re using a self-storage unit in the long term, return at least once a month to air it out. Open the unit and run fans inside for a few hours to dry it and get rid of smells. Then place a dehumidifier in the unit to run overnight.

4. Purchase Calcium Chloride

Calcium chloride absorbs excess moisture in the air. You can usually find it at a hardware store. Cut several holes in the top of a container of calcium chloride to allow air to pass through. Over time, moisture in the air will liquefy the substance. Replace it when there is only liquid remaining.
