Sometimes the source of a roof leak is difficult to zero in on. While you may see signs of trouble like water stains, that area may not be the starting point that needs roof repair. Luckily, here are five tips to supplement your detective skills so you can track down the root of your roofing issue.

How to Figure Out Where Your Roof Is Leaking

1. Inspect the Attic

One of the best places to check when you suspect a roof leak is your attic. Grab a flashlight and start checking the underside of your roofing for dark stains, wet spots, and signs of mold and mildew. Look on rafters as well as in the insulation, which will show signs of deterioration if it’s been saturated. When you start with the wettest area, you can usually trace the damage back to the source.

2. Check for Smells & Sounds

3. Look for Damage

Give your roofing and gutters a visual inspection to check for missing shingles, warped areas, or gaps. Look for puddles on your roof and around the perimeter of your foundation. Check that vents and chimneys are sealed, and if they’re not, they may be the starting point of your roof leak. Finally, take notice of any objects on your roof that shouldn’t be there, such as nails and other debris. These items may be the cause of damage that leads to water trouble.

4. Add Water

Sometimes you have to simulate a storm to figure out the location of your leak. Grab your garden hose and saturate different sections of your roof at a time. Have a friend or family member remain inside so they can see where the water drips in. Move slowly so you have time to notice where the water is traveling.

5. Call for Help

When in doubt, call a professional. Sometimes the source of your roof leak is so elusive that it takes a trained eye and professional skills to get to the bottom of the issue. Most importantly, don’t delay. The longer you wait, the more damage your property will suffer.
