If you enjoy spending time at the beach, you can bring it home with you by transforming your swimming pool into a saltwater pool. It's a sure way of having a new, more natural kind of fun in your backyard. Many homeowners are confused about what materials to use for the switch and the maintenance needed afterward. Follow the steps below to get you started on your conversion.

How to Turn Your Pool Into a Saltwater Oasis

1. Balance Pool Chemistry

Before you can begin adding salt into your swimming pool, you need to ensure its chemistry levels are properly balanced. The recommended level of pH is between 7.4-7.6, alkalinity 100-150 ppm, calcium hardness 200-400, and chlorine 1-3 ppm. Balancing these chemicals will prevent damage to your pool and keep it sanitized against bacteria and gunk. Take it a step further and balance your phosphate levels with commercial pool testing kits. Regulating your phosphate prevents these contaminants from sticking to your pool.

2. Install a Saltwater Generator

A salt chlorinator, also known as a salt sell, works with the salt in your pool to maintain its cleanliness. Purchase your salt chlorinator based on the size of your pool. For example, if your pool size is 20,000 gallons, you need to purchase a generator that can regulate the minimum amount. Going over your pool's gallon size is acceptable. However, anything below will not work effectively.

3. Add Pool Salt

Purchase the salt in bulk at your closest store and begin pouring it into your swimming pool. Ensure the salt levels in your pool match the salt cell's manufacturer recommendations. Once dissolved, you can test the levels with a salt test strip.

4. Perform Maintenance

Add chemical products to reduce the phosphate levels and organic buildup in your saltwater pool. Metal-resistant products and pool conditioner are used when there’s high metal content in your water. Properly maintaining your saltwater pool will keep it running efficiently for years.
