You and your family aren’t the only ones who enjoy taking a dip in the pool in the warm summer sun. Algae thrive in it as well. Though it looks like nothing more than green slime, algae are small aquatic organisms that are similar to plants. Algae growth is a common problem for pool owners, especially in the hotter months. In addition to pool chemical balancing to keep the slime at bay, here are three easy ways to prevent algae from growing.

How to Keep Algae Out of Your Pool

1. Make Waves

Algae like calm, undisturbed water, which means one of the best ways to make your pool unappealing to algae is to keep the water moving. Frequent pool use is a large part of this. For the time you aren’t in the pool, the circulation system is important. Keep an eye on the filters and regularly clean out the pump strainer basket and skimmer to help the process.

2. Keep It Sanitized

Proper pool chemical balancing is an essential part of keeping an algae-free pool. A good level of sanitizer makes for a harmful environment for algae. If your chlorine level is low, it gives algae the opportunity to form. You should keep your chlorine level at 2.0 to 4.0 parts per million. An automatic or floating chlorinator can help with that. Check your sanitizer levels often to ensure they’re within the desired range.

3. Shock the Water

Pool Chemical BalancingWhile pool chemical balancing keeps the algae count down, pool shocking helps to eliminate any trace amounts that may have gotten in. Pool shocking is the process of adding extra chlorine to your pool to kill off bacteria and algae. Doing this on a weekly basis can help eliminate algae spores that may be lurking in the water or on the pool plaster and tile. You can purchase granules at any pool supply store. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely for optimal results.
