Granite countertops can stay beautiful for decades if they are properly maintained. Once you have invested in your new countertop installation, know what you should be doing and what common mistakes to avoid to help you preserve the natural elegance of your kitchen.

Do:

Use mild soap.

A solution of warm water and dish soap applied with a sponge or soft cloth is best for daily cleaning. If you want to shine your countertops, try a granite-specific solution. Avoid anything acidic such as lemon juice or oils, since this can dull the surface over time.

Seal the countertops.

granite countertopsGranite is a porous surface, so applying a sealant is key to preventing stains, dents, and other damage. Sealing is best done every 1-3 years. Check your seal by pouring small drops of water on the granite in different spots. Leave it for 30 minutes — if the water has darkened the granite, you’re due for a new sealant.

Don’t:

Place hot pans on the counter.

Granite countertops are durable, but its heat resistance won’t protect it from searing hot pans. This can damage the surface permanently. Use hot pads or trivets every time you pull a pot off the stove or out of the oven.

Scratch the surface.

If the sealant gets scratched, it will allow moisture through to stain the granite and will dull its appearance. Use a cutting board when preparing food. Don’t let your pets walk on the counter, since their claws can do some damage. Place a protective barrier down if you’re going to be moving around a hard and heavy object, like a toolbox.
