Children with epilepsy may require the care of a pediatric nurse to assist them at home. If you’re considering taking care of a child who has epilepsy, it’s important to learn as much as you can about this medical condition. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes a child to have seizures. These episodes occur when there are changes in the brain’s electrical activity. Anything that disturbs the brain can cause a seizure, including low blood sugar, a brain concussion, or fever. However, once a child has two or more seizures without a known cause, they are diagnosed with epilepsy.

What Are the Symptoms?

Before one takes place, you may notice that the child jerks their arms and legs, blinks rapidly, appears confused, or falls suddenly. During the seizure, the child may have uncontrollable muscle spasms, drool at the mouth, make strange noises, and lose consciousness.

How Is Epilepsy Treated?

Seizures caused by epilepsy are most commonly treated with medication. The medicine type will depend on the type of seizures, age of the child, and side effects. If you’re taking care of a child with epilepsy, you will be expected to give them their medicine on time and as prescribed.

How Do You Care for a Child With Epilepsy?

As a pediatric nurse, there are plenty of ways to help a child with epilepsy live a normal life. For example, you can help them avoid anything that may trigger a seizure, such as stress or lack of sleep. Make sure that the child wears a helmet when bike riding or playing other sports and is supervised while swimming.
