Accent walls are an easy and effective way to elevate the color palette of any room. The contrasting paint color of the accent wall becomes the focal point without overwhelming the room in bright or bold colors. But while it may seem easy to paint a single wall, there are some guidelines to follow to ensure you create the proper effect.

Instructions for Choosing and Painting Your Accent Wall

1. Choose the Right Wall

Locate the focal point in the room — the spot where your eye is naturally drawn. Typically, these walls have fireplaces or headboards, and not home windows or doors. In rectangular rooms, painting the shortest wall away from the entrance makes the room look larger. Always choose a wall with inside corners; outside corners can look unfinished when painted a different color.

2. Choose the Right Paint Color

Don’t worry about matching the colors perfectly. Finally, make sure your paint color will contrast with any items you plan to place on or around the wall, so it’s easy to see.

3. Choose the Right Application Method

Tape the edges of adjacent walls and ceiling with painter’s tape to ensure clean lines, and protect your floors with a drop cloth. Paint the perimeter of the wall with a brush, and cover the remaining space using a roller. Apply at least two coats of paint—three for darker colors. Remove the painter’s tape while the paint is still wet to avoid chipping.
