For many women, intrauterine devices (IUDs) is the perfect birth control option that best suits their lifestyles. A gynecologist inserts this birth control in the uterus, with patients only experiencing mild discomfort. IUDs are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, so this method is preferred by many women for its effectiveness. If you’ve been considering this birth control method, the following guide will break down your IUD options.

Understanding Your IUD Options

ParaGard®

This non-hormonal IUD is made of copper and is effective for 10 years. Your gynecologist might recommend ParaGard if you can’t use hormonal birth control for medical reasons or simply prefer a non-hormonal method. Just keep in mind that a non-hormonal IUD can make your periods heavier and worsen cramps, so it might be best for patients with conditions like endometriosis to consider other birth control methods.

Mirena®

gynecologistIf you’re interested in a hormonal IUD, your gynecologist may recommend Mirena. This birth control method is effective for five years. It works by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining, preventing sperm from reaching an egg. Many patients enjoy this birth control method because it can lighten periods or stop your period completely. Once you have the Mirena taken out, your cycle will continue as normal.

Skyla®

Skyla is similar to Mirena, but it’s a smaller IUD that releases fewer hormones per day. The company markets this IUD to women who have not had children due to its size, but your gynecologist will tell you if you can benefit from a smaller IUD. This birth control method is effective for three years, and most women continue getting their period while it’s in place.

Liletta®

This IUD is also similar to Mirena, with some slight differences. Liletta has been approved for 5-year use, but it releases fewer hormones per day than Mirena. It’s one of the most affordable birth control options, so it can be a great method for women purchasing an IUD out of pocket.

Kyleena®

Kyleena is the newest IUD available and was developed by the same company that created Mirena and Skyla. This birth control method lasts for five years. This birth control is ideal for women who have never had children and those who have given birth before. Kyleena releases fewer hormones per day than Mirena, so many women will still have their monthly period while it’s inserted.
