Whether you’re planning a wedding or a corporate event, food is essential to the success of any large social or business gathering. Some venues provide in-house menus; whereas others require you to hire a caterer. In either case, by asking these three questions of your potential catering partner, you can feel confident your event will come off smoothly.

Questions for Caterers

1. Have You Worked at My Venue Before?

Caterers that have previously worked at your chosen venue will have experience working with the venue’s staff as well as knowledge of the kitchen layout and dining spaces. If your potential picks haven’t worked the venue before, ask them if they’ll scope it out in advance. This will ensure they know which kitchen appliances are available and all about electricity, setup space, and working surfaces. It will also help both you and your team figure out what extra supplies you may need to bring.

2. What’s Included in Your Price?

You may be surprised at what is and is not covered by event-catering fees. Don’t sign a contract until you know standard, service, and rental fees. Standard fees include taxes, gratuities, and tipping. Service charges cover waitstaff, cake and dessert cutting fees, drink service during dinner, and bartenders. Rental fees usually cover tables, chairs, linens, dishes, condiments and seasonings, alcohol, and garbage cans. Finding out what is included in each of these fee categories will help you stay on budget.

3. Do You Handle Table Setup?caterer

A caterer may may or may not handle dining table setup. Chances are, if you are renting dinnerware and silverware from them, they will accommodate you. But it’s always best to ask for assurances. You should also ask for samples of their presentation work. Some caterers are capable of elaborate designs, but  others may not be suitable if you expect sprawling centerpieces with candelabras and flowers.
