If you’re a first-time septic system owner, it can be a little intimidating to learn the ins and outs of the system. From bacterial composition to leach field maintenance, it seems like a lot. However, knowing a few simple guidelines can help you keep your septic tank in great shape.

Do:

Pump your tank regularly.

Most general contractors recommend pumping your septic tank every one to three years, depending on the size of your household and frequency of use. You also want to schedule septic maintenance at least once a year to make sure the other parts are all functioning properly and keep accurate service records. Pumping regularly will stop leaks and keep the system functioning properly.

Monitor water usage.

For example, you do not want to run multiple loads of laundry on the same day while also running the dishwasher. The more you extend your water usage throughout the day, the easier it is for your system to drain it properly in the leach field. Putting too much water in the system can cause a backup and system failure.

Don’t:

Use lots of household chemicals.

While small amounts of regular household cleaners are fine, look for septic-friendly products when it comes to your detergents, soaps, and cleaners. Don’t flush excessive amounts of any toxic chemicals down the drain. The chemicals can kill off the healthy bacteria balance that helps decompose waste in your tank and lead to clogging and a backed-up tank, which can mean extremely expensive leach field repairs.

Flush or drain nondecomposable materials.

Your toilet is not a trash can, and it’s important to make sure that items like diapers, paper towels, feminine products, and cigarette butts don’t end up there. These items are not decomposable and will sit in your tank, causing clogs. Avoid putting coffee grounds and oils like bacon fat down the drain as well. These can cause massive drain clogs.
