If you’re over 70 years old, you may notice you eat less than you used to. As people age, their daily caloric needs decrease. However, essential nutrients become even more vital for senior care. Diets that are high in fiber, calcium, potassium, and vitamins A and C help prevent the risk of diseases like osteoporosis and cancer. As you increase the intake of these nutrients, reduce consumption of salt and saturated fats. Here are some more guidelines to help you eat well every day.

Calories & Carbs

The number of calories you need to consume depends on the degree of activity in your lifestyle. If you still run half-marathons, you require far more calories. However, if daily activity has slowed — as with most people at this age — your daily calorie count should be around 2,000 a day. For an excellent senior care diet, fewer calories should come from bread and grains. About 130 grams of carbs a day are recommended for both men and women over 70.

Proteins, Fibers, & Fats

Men over 70 should eat about 56 grams of lean protein and 28 grams of fiber a day, and women should consume 46 grams of protein and 22 grams of fiber. Stay away from saturated and trans fats; instead, stick to around 5 or 6 teaspoons of healthy fat a day. Find these in seeds, nuts, avocado, and vegetable oil.

Vitamins & Minerals

As you get older, your B-6 needs increase; this vitamin occurs in foods like chicken and fruit. Seniors are more at risk for vitamin B-12 deficiency as well, which can lead to fatigue and depression. B-12 is in fortified milk and orange juice, but you can also take it in supplement form. If you eat a diet high in vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins, you’ll get most of the vitamins and minerals you need naturally. Ask your senior care specialist which foods they recommend.
