It’s the middle of the hottest part of summer. Suddenly, your HVAC system shuts down or starts turning on and off. What should you do? The guide below walks you through a few preliminary steps to follow before calling for AC repair

3 Actions to Take When the HVAC System Shuts Down

1. Check the Filter

Air conditioner filters get clogged over time with dust, dirt, pollen, and other allergens. If your system is short-cycling, it might be a sign that your filter needs to be changed. It’s best practice to replace them every 30-60 days depending on manufacturer instructions. Pet owners, those who smoke, and anyone with asthma should consider switching theirs more often to ensure better indoor air quality.

2. Compressor FailureAC repair

Alternatively, a failing HVAC unit may be due to a faulty compressor. This component of your system is usually located outside and is responsible for mixing warm indoor air with a coolant to be distributed to the home; it then funnels the unwanted heat outdoors. An older or worn-out compressor may overheat or stop functioning, which will lead to shut-down. Therefore, check on it once your air conditioning starts having problems; it will be obvious if it isn’t running. An AC repair service will be able to tell you if you need a new compressor or replacement parts.

3. Check Refrigerant Levels

The refrigerant is what absorbs the thermal energy from warm air and helps convert it to cool air. If the refrigerant is low, you may need to top up the level in the AC. Read the system’s manual to learn how to replace it. Alternatively, there may be a leak somewhere in the system that will need AC repair.
