Your pool receives ample sunlight, making it the perfect place for algae to grow in green, brown, yellow, black, or pink patches. Learn about the common types of algae and how pool services can prevent their growth below.

4 Types of Algae You Might Find in Your Pool

1. Pink

This slime may appear pink, orange, or red. You may find it growing on PVC piping. It’s also commonly found in tandem with white water mold. To get rid of it, brush any affected areas, then shock your pool with more chlorine than normal since this bacteria is chemical-resistant.

2. Black

While it’s technically called black algae, this type may take on a blue-green shade as it grows near cracks in the pool. This organism is normally found in lakes and ponds and is more stubborn than other forms of algae. At the first sign of it, contact a pool services company for immediate cleaning, which requires intense brushing and chemical sanitization.

Sometimes nicknamed “mustard algae,” this brownish-yellow organism grows slowly and stubbornly. You may mistake it for dirt, but if it feels slimy, it’s algae. Unlike some other varieties, brushing at this type of algae will only expose its lower layer. You can kill it with superchlorination and prevent its return with routine upkeep.

4. Green

As the most common pool invader, green algae shows up on walls or in large patches in the water. While it’s relatively easy to deal with, it also grows rapidly and should be dealt with as soon as you notice it. Superchlorination will kill an outbreak, and you can prevent its return by having a pool services company balance your water chemistry.
