Quartz countertops are a new trend compared to other materials, but they’ve quickly become known as a high-end option due to their non-porous qualities. They are harder than other materials, resistant to stains, and easier to clean. Though their low-maintenance qualities are a powerful selling point, accidents can still happen. Here are some tips to keep the luxurious finish looking like new.

3 Tips Cleaning Quartz Countertops

1. Clean Spills Immediately

Most spills, including wine and tea, will not stain the quartz surface, but once they dry, they’ll become a sticky mess. Create a mixture of three parts water and one part vinegar, and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the countertop, let the water-vinegar mixture sit for about a minute, and wipe it clean with a paper towel. Avoid highly acidic cleaners, such as ammonia, lemon, or bleach. Foods high in acids should also be wiped up immediately. Acids, if allowed to sit for long periods of time, break down the amalgamation factor of quartz, and eventually permanent stains can creep into the resin.

2. Tackle Grease & Tough Stains

Quartz CountertopsThere are plenty of degreasers on the market, and they won’t hurt the countertops as long as they’re not acidic. In most cases, though, liquid dish soap will do the trick. Heavy stains—even permanent marker—are not a problem as long as the stains aren’t in the resin. Use isopropyl rubbing alcohol or WD-40 on a moist cloth to attack really stubborn stains. Afterward, wipe down the counter with a paper towel and warm water to get rid of the residue.

3. Protect the Integrity

Although they’re very strong, quartz countertops aren’t invincible and can be chipped and broken. Avoid dropping large heavy objects, breaking chunks of ice, or striking the corners of the countertop. Quartz can handle up to 300° Fahrenheit safely, but it doesn’t do well under quick temperature changes. Placing a hot pot on the surface followed by something out of the freezer could cause it to crack.
