Drinking water isn’t always safe to drink without first being treated. Two of the most common types of water treatment systems are water softeners and reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water systems. While these are both filtration systems, some differences can affect which is a better fit for your home and it’s water. Be aware of these two devices as well as explanations of how they work.

What Are Water Softeners?

Water softeners"Hard" water is water that contains high concentrations of chalky minerals like calcium and magnesium. These minerals can affect the taste of water as well as lead to severe issues in your home. For instance, they leave mineral deposits in the sink, create water stains on glassware, and make laundry soap less effective so that loads often come out looking gray. Water softeners use a tub of salt and a technique called "ion exchange," that pulls the minerals out of the water and replaces them with sodium. The result is cleaner laundry, better-tasting water, and shinier dishes. However, water softeners do not filter out other impurities, like lead or other chemicals.

What Are Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems?

Reverse osmosis is a filtration system that separates microscopic impurities by forcing water under pressure through a semipermeable membrane. It removes contaminants like chloride, copper, chromium, nitrate, and lead, and produces tasteless, odorless liquid that is safe to drink. With a microfilter that removes pollutants of higher than 0.0001 microns, it also eliminates bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.

RO and water softener systems complement each other nicely. When used in tandem, softeners remove hard minerals that can damage RO systems, and the RO system further purifies the water beyond what a softener can accomplish. Many households install both and enjoy the benefits of a dual softening/filtration system.
