When it comes to employing more energy-efficient practices in the home, some people are motivated by a desire to reduce their impact on the environment. Most people, however, are more interested in saving on their heating and cooling bills. Whatever inspires you to save on your energy consumption, there are many ways to do it. Here are a few suggestions to help you get started.

How to Save on Your Heating & Cooling Costs

1. Inspect Your HVAC Filter

In some systems, a dirty filter can be cleaned, while others require you to replace it entirely. Whatever your system requires, it should always operate with a clean filter. While the filter should be replaced or cleaned every two or three months, you may need to do so more frequently if you have pets or someone in your home experiences allergies.

2. Keep Vents & Ducts Clear

heating and coolingAs your vents or ducts become obstructed with dust and debris, less air will be pushed through the system. This will make your unit work harder, and you’ll use more energy to achieve the same level of comfort. While you can clean the vents yourself, an HVAC contractor can perform this during their biannual inspection.

3. Invest in Energy-Efficient Windows

While this may represent a significant expense, it will pay off for many years to come. Traditional windows, skylight doors, and entrance door windows have just one pane of glass, which promotes greater energy loss. However, energy-efficient windows have two or three panes, which help insulate the home. This will keep the cool air trapped indoors during the summer and hot air confined in the winter.

4. Schedule Regular Inspections

Scheduling a biannual inspection ensures your system is in peak operating condition and identifies mechanical problems that may be developing. It’s much more convenient and cost-effective to identify and repair an issue early, rather than wait until it causes the entire system to fail.
