If you’re looking to spruce up an old porch or deck, adding some paint can be a breath of fresh air. Painting lumber seems like an easy job, but can be more complicated than many people realize. Below are some steps to get the job done right.

How to Paint Your Porch or Deck

Use Sandpaper

After you’ve cleaned the surface of the wood and let it completely dry, you’ll need to sand it down. It will smooth the surface and prepare it for the first coat. Sand the wood with fine-grit #180 sandpaper. You can also use an orbital floor sander to work quicker. When finished, remove loose particles with a shop vacuum, then use a cotton rag dipped in water to remove the remaining dust.

Prime the Wood

An aluminum wood primer is ideal for lumber that will be exposed to rain, such as your deck. It will fill the cavities in the wood. Use a roller to apply the primer. If the it looks clear after it dries, you’ll need to apply another coat. Since primer has an uneven texture, sand the primer with fine #220 sandpaper for a more finished look.

Paint Multiple Layers

Multiple layers of paint are effective in creating a professional look. This will also make the paint last longer. Three coats will assure maximum coverage; let each dry overnight before adding the next one. Make sure to sand between each coat of paint using fine sandpaper, like #220 grit.
