When it comes to water activities, hopping on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) is a fun and relaxing way to enjoy the ocean while getting a full-body workout. If you want to try this exciting sport, here are some helpful tips to get you started.

Advice for SUP Beginners

1. Don’t Look at Your Feet

Many beginners experience difficulty balancing on the water. Due to the narrow length of the stand-up paddleboard, staring at your feet will throw off your balance. When you’re unbalanced, the board will see-saw, and you’ll tumble into the water. To stay afloat, keep your head up and look toward the horizon.

2. Use a Leash

stand-up paddleboardFalling is common for beginners, and your board may drift away when you’re in the water. Wear a leash so that the board is tethered to your body, and put it on the ankle so that it’s out of the way when you move. Get a leash that's roughly the same length as your stand-up paddleboard so that you have optimal control over it.

3. Start in Calm Waters

Look for an open area without too many people to practice your SUP technique. You’ll progress much faster in calm waters because they let you pay attention to your form instead of focusing on being balanced.

4. Engage Your Core

Avoid making the arm muscles do all the work as you’ll tire out faster. Activate your core to give the arm muscles more power and make each stroke easier. Engaging the core will also help you balance on the standup paddleboard.
