Worms are parasites that live in your dog's digestive tract. They steal nutrients from your pet and can have a damaging impact on their health. Luckily, there are a few ways of recognizing this issue from your dog’s behavior. If you see any of these symptoms, you should bring your dog to a veterinarian to have them check for worms.

Signs to Have a Veterinarian Check for Worms

1. Digestive Issues

Because your dog is having food stolen right out of their belly, they'll be hungrier than usual. However, they may still lose weight or seem unsatisfied with their food. They may also have an upset stomach and may vomit or have diarrhea.

2. Bloating

While your dog may be losing weight in the rest of their body, their stomach may actually look larger. Worms can cause bloating that expands the stomach to be out of proportion to the rest of the body. This is especially obvious and common in young puppies.

3. Weakness

4. Itchy Backside

Worms can sometimes cause persistent, uncomfortable itching. Your dog may lick, scratch, or bite their backside frequently. They may also scoot around on the carpet to try to scratch the itch.

5. Visible Worms

Worms are sometimes carried out of your dog's system through vomiting or in the stool. There are several types of worms in various sizes that your dog may be infected with. They are usually noticeably white or tan, so call your veterinarian if you see anything suspicious.
