If you’re not acquainted with your septic tank, now is the time to learn its parts and how they work. Though you should always call a professional if something goes wrong, knowing the individual components of the system and what they do will help you understand the issues that may occur, why they happen, and what you could do to prevent them in the future. Here’s what you need to know.

3 Components of a Septic Tank System & Why They’re Important

1. Septic Tank

Every time you flush the toilet, run a tap, or take a shower, the wastewater runs down your drains and into your tank. Once inside, the solid waste sinks to the bottom, and the liquid waste — or effluent — flows through a filter and out of the tank. Keep your tank running smoothly by avoiding flushing feminine hygiene products, diapers, paper towels, and wipes.

2. Distribution Box

The distribution box moves the wastewater out of the septic tank and into the drain field. It has several pipes leading out of it to distribute the wastewater evenly. If you notice that part of your drain field seems to be bearing more of the load, your distribution box isn’t working correctly.

Septic Tank3. Drain Field

The drain field is where all your wastewater gets dispersed back into the ground. The water works its way through the soil, naturally filtering as it goes before finally settling into the groundwater. Showers and sinks draining slowly, water and sewage from toilets and drains backing up into the home, or a dreadful smell are all indicators that your drain field has become impermeable. That means it can no longer absorb wastewater. In this case, a professional needs to install a replacement drain field or connect the tank to the local sewage system.
