One of the most nerve-wracking pest control problems you can have is a visit from a skunk. Known for the powerful odor of their spray, these animals should not be played with or startled. If you do come across one while taking out the trash or performing lawn care, follow these three steps.

What to Do About a Skunk in Your Yard

1. Avoid Startling It

Skunks have poor eyesight, so they can't see you very well and will easily mistake you for a threat. If you see a skunk, try to stay at least 10 feet away, and get out of its path. Move away slowly and smoothly. Don't raise your arms or shout at the skunk, and don't make sudden movements. Be especially careful if it raises its tail, stands on two paws, or stomps its feet; these are warning behaviors that precede spraying.

2. Find Its Burrow

Carefully watch the skunk from a distance to see where it goes. You can also look around for dug-out burrows or tracks and disturbed dirt that may show you where a skunk is hiding. However, remember that skunks are nocturnal and they hibernate so, during the day and in the winter, that burrow is probably occupied. Pets should be kept away from this area if at all possible.

3. Call a Professional

To remove the skunk, professionals often use traps. You shouldn't attempt this yourself since you are likely to get sprayed. Once the skunk is gone, your pest control expert can talk to you about skunk repellents to keep any more of these animals from showing up, as well as helping you identify areas that should be sealed off to prevent animals from living there.
