Whether it’s suspended from the ceiling, resting on a tabletop, or standing on the floor, a lamp can make the design of a whole room come together. However, like any other aspect of interior decorating, the process for finding the right lampshade to accent it is never straightforward. While custom lampshades are always an option, you can try to find one in-store first by following these guidelines.

How to Pick the Perfect Lampshade

1. Bring the Lamp Base

Although this is only possible for smaller table lamps, bringing the lamp base with you to the store is the best way to gauge your options. If you can’t bring it with you, take measurements and several photos from various angles so you can better visualize each shade that you look at. Also, try to photograph the color of your lamp as accurately as possible, especially if you’re going beyond neutral tones.

2. Hide Your Hardware

Nothing will throw off the look of your lamp like visible hardware. When buying a lampshade, you want to ensure the switch and harp—the part that holds the lampshade—are both concealed. If you’ve found the perfect shade but it’s a little too short on either the top or bottom, it’s best to have a custom lampshade made.

3. Consider the Proportions

custom lampshadesThe right lampshade should be about twice the width of the base and two-thirds to three-quarters of its height; anything significantly larger or smaller will likely look awkward. Creating balance applies to the style as well. If you have a striking, one-of-a-kind lamp base, you’ll want a simple shade that will complement it, not compete with it.

4. Pair Similar Shapes

When in doubt, mimic the shape of the base: Use round lampshades for round bases and rectangular shades for rectangular ones. For bases with unique geometric shapes, rounder is usually better.

5. Break the Rules

Interior decorating should always reflect your personal style. If you find something that doesn’t follow these design guidelines, but it looks great on the base that you have, go ahead and buy it! Context is everything—if it works in your home, that’s all that matters.
