If you’ve never heard of a PET-CT scanner, you’re not alone. PET-CT scanners are integrated scanning devices that combine images from a positron emission tomography (PET) scan with a computed tomography (CT) scan. When the scans are performed at the same time and with the same machine, they produce detailed pictures of tissues and organs that also reveal any abnormal activity. With a PET-CT scan, doctors can identify cancers and determine their stage.

At Main Street Radiology, specialists use PET-CT scanners to capture whole-body images that measure metabolic activity in order to scan for cancer, as well as neurological and cardiac abnormalities. Medicare covers PET-CT scans, and most insurance companies will also reimburse patients.

The procedure itself is non-invasive, and it takes only 15 minutes. PET-CT scans are performed by radiologic technologists and interpreted by radiologists. Before the procedure, you will be led to an exam table (it may have straps, pillows or a head cradle to help hold you in place). Once you are secure, the table will move back and forth under the PET-CT machine, which resembles a large ring. During the scan, the technologist will monitor your test nearby, and you will be able to communicate through an intercom system. After the scan, you can return to your regular activates.

In addition to PET-CT scans, Main Street Radiology also provides Bone Density Testing, MRI exams, lung screening services and more. To request an appointment at one of their New York locations, you can call (718) 428-1500 or visit their website
