Do's & Don’ts for Keeping Your Basement Remodel Bright, Lincoln, Nebraska

When done right, your basement can become a space you’ll love to spend time in. One issue many people find during their basement remodeling project is the lack of natural light. You and your remodeling contractor can overcome this common challenge by knowing how to brighten up the space.

Do:

Use layered lighting.

Because you don’t have much natural light, you need to create it yourself. Begin your basement remodeling project by installing plenty of ambient lighting, such as recessed canned lights. Add task lighting in areas that you’ll spend the most time. For example, use under-cabinet LEDs for the entertainment center and table lamps for desks.

Create an open floor plan.

An open floor plan makes any space feel larger and allows light to move through it easily. You can maintain an intimate feeling by arranging your furniture into groups, such as putting couches and chairs together for lounging while, in another corner, having a bar set up. If you want to divide the basement into separate rooms—perhaps for the purpose of limiting sound transference—consider using glass doors to stop it from feeling claustrophobic.

Don’t:

Use dark colors.

Forget your windows.

If you have basement windows—even tiny ones—use treatments to frame them and make them look bigger. If there aren’t any, consider talking to your remodeling contractor about mimicking the same effect using backlit frosted glass.
