Since the average family uses hot water for bathing, washing dishes, and doing laundry, a broken water heater can bring the whole household to a grinding halt. Thankfully, there’s a way to monitor this appliance for excessive wear and tear, so you can schedule service before it breaks down entirely. The sacrificial anode rod is the key to determining your water heater’s life span. Here’s what all homeowners should know about this critical plumbing component.

What Is the Anode Rod?

Anode rods are comprised of a steel core with a metal coating—usually aluminum, magnesium, or zinc. Through a process called electrolysis, an anode rod will protect a water heater’s exposed steel. By attracting the corrosive elements in the water, it prevents the tank’s inner lining from rusting. As such, an anode rod that’s corroding is simply doing its job. At some point, though, it will have to be replaced.

How Can You Tell if the Anode Rod Needs to Be Changed?

water heaterYour plumber should check the anode rod whenever they service the water heater. Between maintenance visits, however, keep an eye on the quality of the hot water. If it comes out red or brown, it could be a sign that the rod needs to be replaced. Rusty water means the actual tank has started to corrode because the rod has disintegrated entirely and is no longer doing its job. If you have an aluminum rod, look out for a slimy, gellike substance, as well; as aluminum corrodes, it produces this deposit, which can make its way into the water supply.

How Long Should an Anode Rod Last?

The average anode rod will last four to five years. Factors that can affect the total lifetime include the amount and quality of the water that runs through the tank each day. Additionally, sodium, which is often used to soften water, can shorten the life of an anode rod considerably. In fact, if you oversoften the water, the anode rod could corrode in a matter of months.
