When the weather is perfect for grilling and boating, why not take the opportunity to enjoy both at once? With its large deck, a pontoon boat is a favorite for hosting an aquatic barbecue party. Whether your vessel has a unit built in or you’re bringing your own device, there are some steps you should take to ensure your grilling goes smoothly. To help you plan a fun and safe outing, here’s a guide to everything you should know about grilling on your pontoon.

A Guide to Pontoon Boat Grilling

What You’ll Need

pontoon boatsYou have the choice between gas, charcoal, and electric grills. A gas grill is a cost-effective option with versatile sizing. The necessary fuel, propane, is cheap and easy to obtain. Charcoal is popular among grilling aficionados for the smoky taste it leaves, but it does require some patience, as fresh fish will take time to cook with coal. The most common charcoal model allows pontoon boat owners to attach their grill to a handrail. No starter fluid is necessary, but be sure to keep your stored coal dry to ensure it ignites. If your boat already comes with a grill, it’s most likely an electric option. You’ll need a consistent power source onboard to keep it running, but no additional fuel is required.

Important Safety Tips

As with any grilling, accidents may happen if you don’t follow necessary safety procedures. Always read the manual provided with the grill and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never leave the device unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance. A grill may send embers flying, so only use it in the open section of your boat to allow for ventilation.

Before and during the trip, check that your handrail grill is mounted securely. Although you may be tempted to go out in your usual boating gear, avoid loose clothing, which may get blown in the wind and catch fire. Keep a charcoal grill over the water when lit to prevent hot embers from making contact with your deck. If you have a gas grill, examine the connections for leaks before turning it on. Put out the fire immediately after you’re done and wait for the grill to cool before storing it.
