Over the years, your teeth may experience decay, damage, or discoloration. When this happens, dental crowns and bridges may be an option to protect your smile and keep your teeth safe. Here’s what you need to know about these dental prosthetics.

A Dental Guide to Crowns & Bridges

What They Are

Crowns are fixed permanent dental prosthetics that help protect your teeth from further damage by covering them. They act as a sort of “cap” that keeps food particles and plaque from decaying your teeth and are usually made with ceramic, porcelain, or metal.

Bridges are false teeth held in place by two crowns that cover adjacent teeth, anchoring the prosthetic into place. They’re used to replace one or more extractions by “bridging” the anchor teeth.

Why They’re Needed

bridgeThe right candidates for crowns and bridges are people with teeth that are missing, have experienced significant decay, or have been fractured or chipped. They can also protect weak teeth, such as after a recent root canal treatment. Teeth that have had multiple or large fillings could benefit from crowns because those teeth are more susceptible to fracture or de-bonded fillings.

The Installation Process

Crowns and bridges are crafted and installed over two appointments. During the first appointment, your dentist will take an imprint of your bite, particularly the area needing the prosthetic. Your measurements are then sent to a dental lab for creation. During your second appointment, the gums around your teeth with be moved and your teeth dried. The prosthetic is cemented directly onto the tooth or teeth in question. Afterward, the dentist will measure and correct your bite so your new fixture is comfortable and functional.
