When your toilet starts flooding, it can be a rush to solve the problem before calling an emergency plumber. After all, every home has one, but not every homeowner knows how to fix one. Many common overflow problems are easy to solve, so make sure to study up before you’re caught in an emergency.

Why Is My Toilet Overflowing?

Most toilet overflows are caused by clogs, either from something currently in the bowl or something that went down before. Diapers, baby wipes, and sanitary products are all common items that cause clogs, so avoid an overflow by tossing these in the garbage. Your toilet issues might also indicate there’s a problem with the sewer or septic system, or that you have damaged pipes or malfunctioning toilet parts. If you suspect something other than a clog is causing your overflow, call a plumber immediately.

How Do I Fix My Toilet?

1. Turn Off the Water

The first thing you need to do if your toilet is overflowing is stop the water supply. You can do this by turning the valve that’s located near the underside of the toilet counterclockwise. If you can’t find or move the shut-off valve, continue to step two.

2. Locate the Flapper

plumberLift the cover of your toilet tank and locate the flapper—the soft rubber disc that covers the hole at the bottom of the tank. If the flapper isn’t covering the hole, it may be because the flapper chain is twisted or not long enough. Manually replace the flapper and adjust the chain if necessary to stop the water.

3. Check the Float Ball

If the flapper won’t close or is in place, the next step is to check the float ball. This will be a plastic float that indicates the tank is full when it rises to a certain level. If the float is cracked and holding water, it can’t rise to the surface. Manually raise it to the water line on the inside of the tank to stop the water.

4. Clear the Clog

Once the water has stopped running, it’s time to clear the clog and clean up. With rubber gloves protecting your hands, use a plunger to gently remove the clog. If repeated attempts don’t solve the problem, clean up the mess and call a plumber.
