As you age, your risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and other oral health issues can increase. Senior dental care is especially important to preserve your smile and avoid oral health complications. Making a few adjustments and being mindful of everyday practices is the best way, so use the following information as a guide.

How Can Seniors Improve Their Oral Health?

1. Stay Hydrated

Dry mouth can create a lot of oral health issues. It can be a side effect of medication or general dehydration. Saliva actively washes your teeth throughout the day to prevent decay-causing bacteria from settling. When your mouth is dry, food particles will stick, and decay will set in. Aim to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day and chew sugar-free gum to promote saliva production.

2. Brush, Floss & Visit the Dentist

If you have arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, or conditions that affect your hands, purchase an electric toothbrush or water flosser. Many senior transport services will help you to and from your biannual visits to the dentist.

3. Keep Dentures Clean

Dentures are a great cosmetic dentistry solution to tooth loss and oral trauma, and they require regular dental care. The plates can become a breeding ground for bacteria, so clean them with an approved solution once a day. Brushing and flossing are also a must. You should also soak them to prevent warping and gum pain.
