Pets love fun in the sun just as much as people. However, like humans, they need adequate defense from heat dangers. Summer safety measures are crucial for your pet to remain healthy and safe, both indoors and outdoors. Below are some veterinarian-provided tips to keep your pet protected this season.

3 Summer Pet Safety Tips

1. Never Leave Them Alone in a Hot Car

The interior of a parked car can feel like an oven on a hot day. In less than an hour, temperatures can rise to 140 degrees, even with the windows slightly cracked open. This leaves your pet susceptible to heatstroke and other critical conditions. The issue is so serious that 31 states have also enacted laws to protect animals from confinement in a vehicle under dangerous conditions. Take your pet with you when you need to leave the car, even if it’s for a short grocery trip or mail run.

2. Walk When It’s Coolerveterinarians

Instead of walking your pet midday, take them out in the morning and evening. Asphalt can get as hot as 140 degrees, even if the surrounding temperature is significantly lower. If the surface is too hot for you to stand on, then it’s worse for your pet; they can face abrasions and serious burns on their paw pads. Stick to grassy areas instead of sidewalks, and ensure your pet is adequately hydrated on their walks. According to veterinarians, glassy eyes or intense panting indicate your pet needs to take a rest in the shade and rehydrate.

3. Provide Plenty of Water

Like people, pets need plenty of water to stay active and healthy, particularly during summer. Dogs need to pant to release moisture from their lungs and cool their bodies. Cats groom their coats to produce a cool layer of moisture from the saliva that evaporates off their fur. In both cases, pets lose moisture in the process, which must be replenished to prevent dehydration and heatstroke. Bring bowls of water with you on long walks. Feed them wet food more frequently, as it has more hydrating properties than its kibble counterpart.
