If you’re looking for an exciting new way to workout, kickboxing is worth exploring. It’s a high-intensity sport, and the first class at the gym can seem intimidating. Understanding the basics and coming equipped will ensure an enjoyable experience, and you may even develop a new passion in the process.

What to Know Going Into Your First Kickboxing Class

1. Take It Slow

Unless you have martial arts experience, kickboxing will be a completely new experience. It takes years to master the many moves and techniques, so prepare to start slow. The primary moves are the jab, right cross, left hook, right hook, left uppercut, and right uppercut. Kicks will follow. You’ll have to practice these regularly and stick to your instructor’s guidance. You’ll gradually pick up the basics and they’ll feel more natural.

2. Hydrate & Eat

gymKickboxing is a high-intensity full-body workout, so make sure you fuel your body. You’ll need to drink plenty of water leading up to the class and eat something an hour or so before. Aim for lean meat, vegetables, and plenty of healthy, whole grain carbs, as these will help your performance. You’re also going to sweat, so bring a sports bottle to the gym so you stay hydrated during the workout.

3. The Right Gear Is Essential

Mobility is a must, so invest in proper workout gear. Use shorts, a tank top, stretch pants, or a t-shirt. They should be tight but not restrict your range of motion. You’ll also need hand wraps and gloves, because you’ll be doing a lot of punching going forward. The gym may carry these, and their staff can help you pick the right size.
