Replacing the filter on your business’s water filtration system isn’t just about providing your team with the freshest, best-tasting water. It’s also about their health, as clogged filters no longer provide protection against a wide variety of contaminants, including pesticides, bacterial strains, and chlorine by-products. Below are a few signs that indicate it’s time to change your water filtration system.

What to Know About Water Filtration System Filters

When to Change It

Old filters clogged with sediment and other pollutants slow the liquid’s flow, resulting in longer wait times for drinking water and subsequently distracted employees. Mineral buildup around sinks and faucets from inefficient water filtration also causes flow problems.

The water’s smell and taste are affected as well. Depending on the contaminants, your team may experience health problems. E. coli, salmonella, and hepatitis are among the many health issues linked to contaminated drinking water. A dirty filter also shortens the life of your water filtration system by making the device work extra hard to provide clean water.

How Often to Replace It

water filtrationHow often you should change the filter in your water filtration system depends in part on how often it’s used. If you have a smaller office with less than ten employees,  for example, you will not need to replace the filter as often.

The type of system your business uses also plays a role. Both micron sediment and activated carbon filters should be changed at least every six months, while inline filters benefit from changing every six months to one year. Advanced reverse osmosis membrane systems can go up to five years before they need replacing; however, this system needs checking every month with a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter. Excess minerals in reverse osmosis systems cause taste and smell issues along with potentially damaging the system. It is generally best to use a three to six month replacement schedule to maintain water filtration quality and function.
