What Happens if Varicose & Spider Veins Are Not Treated?, Manhattan, New York

Spider and varicose veins are often seen as cosmetic issues. They create swollen veins that may be unsightly or uncomfortable for patients, but left untreated, they may also cause a few health concerns. If you have these types of veins, understanding some of these complications will help you stay safe. It may also encourage you to seek treatment. To help you care for your health, here is more information about these growths and the problems they are linked to.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

They occur when the valves of the veins stop blood from moving efficiently. If they fail to close fully, blood leaks back into the vein, causing swelling and pressure. Eventually, the walls of the veins are weakened by this pressure and become permanently enlarged.

These problematic veins may also be caused by genetic factors, standing for long periods, and hormonal life events like pregnancy or menopause. Women and older people are more likely to have varicose veins. Since excess weight puts more strain on the legs, obesity is also a risk factor.

What Are the Potential Complications?

Leg Ulcers

Ulcers can develop on the skin in areas where varicose veins are present, particularly in the lower part of the leg. A discolored patch on the skin is an indicator that an ulcer is about to develop. Without treatment, these wounds may keep recurring.

Varicose veinsBleeding

If you injure a leg that has varicose veins, the area is more susceptible to bleeding since the vein is at the surface of the skin. To stop blood flow, keep your leg elevated.

Superficial Thrombophlebitis

A blood clot, also known as thrombophlebitis, can form in these veins and cause swelling, tenderness, and redness. Clots that are close to the surface are referred to as superficial thrombophlebitis. If this happens, a doctor may direct you to take blood-thinning medications.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that happens deeper beneath the skin. It may bring some of the same signs as superficial thrombophlebitis, or you may experience no symptoms at first. This condition may be serious, so visit a doctor if you notice warmth in your legs, pain, or discolored skin. To avoid this when you have spider veins, take precautions during long journeys by wearing compression stockings, moving around frequently, and staying hydrated.
