If your home improvement project involves an addition, the first step is to figure out whether you want to build up or out. Is it better if you invest in a new top floor or expand the ground floor? The answer depends on several factors that are looked at in greater detail below.

Is Building Up or Out Better for Home Additions?

Building Out

First, you need to know the size of the lot. Is it big enough to accommodate a new section of ground floor? Are you willing to give up the space? You should also review the budget and decide if you can afford paying for a new foundation, should it be necessary. Consider your plans for the future as well. If you want to grow old in the house, would like to avoid having to climb stairs?

Building Up

The easiest way to build a second story is by placing it over a connected garage, if you have one. A garage can generally handle the extra weight that’s required for room additions. If you don’t want the new floor there, however, it becomes more complicated and expensive to lay the foundation work and erect the support posts. Your ground floor would almost certainly need some degree of remodeling to make a second floor possible.

Provided you have neither the space nor the desire to build out and think it would be worth the potentially greater expenses to build up, consult a contractor. They can help figure out the details of the home improvement project.
