A wood fence is excellent for security, curb appeal, and property value. If you take care of your new fence, it will last many years and maintain its beauty well. It’s essential to know what to do and what to avoid as you maintain your fence.

Do:

Treat it.

Treating your wood will keep it from rotting. Have your custom fence company use wood that is pressure treated, which will make it resistant to fungal and mildew growth. Apply your own treatment regularly every three to five years to maintain that resistance.

Paint it.

fencePainting seals the wood to protect it against weather, moisture, and insects. Paint your fence every five years or whenever it starts to peel off the fence. If you prefer a more natural look, staining the wood works as well.

Don’t:

Use it as a trellis.

Plants may pop up around your fence posts or you may be tempted to use it as a trellis. However, the plants growing directly against the wood trap moisture against it and attract insects. The extra weight will also wear down your fence. Keep all plants trimmed back and topsoil away from the base of the posts.

Expose it to water.

Even a sealed and treated fence will rot if it is exposed to too much water. Set up a drainage system so water will not pool around the base of your fence. Set up sprinkler systems so no overspray is sent onto the fence itself.
