Broken appliances are always a hassle, but a busted air conditioning makes the hot summer days feel almost unbearable. Once you’ve called for air conditioning repair, there are a few things you can do to keep yourself comfortable and make sure your home is as cool as possible until help arrives.

How to Stay Cool When the AC Is Down

1. Use Fans

Switch on all stationary and overhead fans you have to keep air circulating throughout your home while you wait for the air conditioning repair cavalry. The windchill effect can reduce the air feel in your house by approximately 4 degrees. Setting ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise aids circulation as well. You can even place a bowl of ice cubes in front of an oscillating fan for a refreshing burst of cold air. The air will pick up the coolness of the cubes and push it out into the room, lowering the overall temperature.

2. Block Outside Light

South- and west-facing rooms are the most difficult to cool, so use thick, dark curtains with a white reflective backing to reduce incoming heat. If your home is designed for natural cooling, there may be trees on the south and west sides to help with additional shade while you wait for air conditioning repair.

3. Avoid Heat-Generating Appliances

Don’t add extra heat to your home by using your oven and stovetop to cook meals. Try sticking to cool foods like fresh fruit and vegetables. If you absolutely must use heat, use the microwave, toaster oven, or outdoor grill. It can also help to wait until after dark to run the dishwasher or dryer.
