One common issue that homeowners have to deal with is animals making their way into their chimneys. They may make their nests on top or crawl inside and get stuck, blocking airflow. The following is a list of the most common animals to look out for that can cause serious chimney problems.

Animals That Often Cause Chimney Problems

1. Birds

chimney problemBirds often build their nests on top of chimneys, since chimneys provide a warm and secure location safe from predators. Nesting is a common chimney problem in the spring. If you have birds covering your chimney, they may block the flow of flue gas, trapping hazardous carbon monoxide inside your home.

2. Bats

Bats will also make their homes inside your chimney to hide from predators, particularly during mating season. They may even fly down into your house and get trapped inside. Many bats carry rabies, so you should never try to deal with one on your own.

3. Raccoons

While raccoons can’t fly, they’re exceptional climbers and can squeeze into small spaces. The females like to give birth inside chimneys for protection. They raise their babies inside, usually on the smoke shelf. They carry diseases and can be very dangerous when approached due to their sharp teeth and claws.

4. Squirrels

Squirrels see your chimney as just another tree. They climb inside for warmth and protection, especially during the cold winter months. Squirrels may be cute, but they will attack if you get too close and carry many diseases, including rabies.
