If you’re installing new outlets in your home, your electrical services contractor may recommend using GFCI outlets. Short for ground fault circuit interrupter, GFCI outlets contain test and reset buttons that can protect you and others from electric shock. Learn more about how these outlets work and why certain rooms in your home might need them.

How Do GFCI Outlets Work?

imageUnlike regular outlets, GFCI outlets have the ability to stop an electrical current in its tracks and keep you and your family safe from harmful shocks. GFCI outlets are designed to detect when an electrical current is escaping by measuring the current that leaves the outlet on one side and comes back on the other. If those measurements don’t line up, the device's built-in circuit breaker will cut off the current to stop the leak.

For example, when you plug in an appliance like a hair dryer, the GFCI outlet will monitor the amount of power it uses. If you were to accidentally drop that hair dryer into a sink full of water, the GFCI would detect this interruption in current use and cut the power, saving you from electric shock. GFCI outlets are especially effective because they work in milliseconds—faster than a human can react.

Which Rooms Should Have GFCI Outlets?

You should ask your electrical services contractor to put GFCI outlets in places where the outlet—or the devices you plug into it—could get wet. According to the National Fire Protection Association, GFCI outlets should be present in bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, kitchens, and laundry or utility rooms. GFCI outlets can also be installed in other areas of your home for greater safety.
