Whether you’ve just moved into a new home or security is a general concern, upgrading your door locks can provide valuable peace of mind. There are a variety of options a locksmith can install, so consider how each might meet your functional and aesthetic goals. Below, you’ll find the most popular options.

What Kinds of Door Locks Are There?

1. Knob Locks

Knob locks are highly recognizable. They’re attached to handles. By twisting the lock on the interior side of the door or using a key on the exterior portion, the cylinder turns. This either activates or deactivates a series of pins that keep the door locked or unlocked. While inexpensive and useful inside the home, locksmiths don’t recommend them for doors leading outside as they are easily damaged or picked.

2. Deadbolts

locksmithContrary to that, deadbolts are extremely tough and secure. These are placed above entry door knobs and feature a thick cylinder that plugs into a hole in the door jamb. Once in place, they’re extremely difficult to break or loosen. You can choose an elegant brass or stainless steel finish that will fit your interior design palate.

3. Keyless

If you truly want to take your home locks to the next level, have a locksmith install a keyless entry pad. These have a deadbolt design and respond to a code. They can also have scanners that unlock the door when a corresponding card is swiped. While more expensive, these are extremely effective against break-ins since they’re more complex to work around. However, users must be careful to not let someone see their pin entry and to keep their card in a secure location at all times.
