As you grip the steering wheel to drive, turn, and go in reverse, it’s the constant-velocity (CV) axle that helps smooth out the motions. When these joints don’t provide power from the transmission to the wheels, steering becomes nearly impossible. Here are a few signs that your CV axle is not performing properly.

What Are the Signs a CV Axle Is Failing?

1. Vibrations

If you feel vehicle vibrations while driving, it could be a sign of a bent CV axle. The motion will typically increase as you accelerate. Continuing to drive in this condition can lead to permanent axle damage, so it’s best to get it repaired as soon as possible.

2. Clicking Sounds

3. Grease on Tire’s Interior

Tears, cracks, or holes in the CV axle’s boot can cause grease to accumulate inside your tires. Getting an inspection can determine if the boot requires a replacement or the axle is the culprit.

4. Loud Clunking Noise

A worn CV axle will typically produce a loud clunking sound. If you have a vehicle with front-wheel drive, the noise may come from the axle’s inner joint. Rear-wheel drive vehicles can produce clunking sounds from both the inner and outer joints, however.
