Long-term disability insurance is recommended for everyone, no matter your age or health. As you look at your options, you’ll likely have a lot of questions. Review a few of the most common questions below to help decide which policy would work best for you.

Disability Insurance FAQ

When are you considered disabled?

This will be laid out in your policy. For example, some will consider you disabled if you’re unable to perform the duties of your job due to sickness or accidental injuries. Others will consider you disabled if you cannot perform the duties of any job based on your training and experience.

How much coverage do you need?

You should get enough to cover all your living expenses, including your rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, gas, debt payments, and other necessary monthly costs. Many people find coverage that equals their net pay. You might want more to provide for additional health costs that aren’t covered by health insurance.

Do you still need a policy if you have group disability through your employer?

insuranceGroup disability helps with costs, but you’ll want to check the amount of coverage along with the terms of your policy. If they don’t seem adequate, you can get your own to cover the difference. Keep in mind that the benefits you receive from a group policy will likely be taxed.

What is the elimination period?

This is also known as the waiting period. The period will begin the first day you get injured or fall ill. You’ll start to receive your benefits at the end of this period. Most are 90 days long, though they’re also available in 30, 60, 180 or 365 days. Which you choose will depend on how long you can go without income.
