While going to an auction for the first time may seem daunting, it’s an easy and rewarding process if you know what to do. One smart strategy all experienced auction-goers use is attending the item preview. Before heading to your first estate auction, follow the guide below to learn what the preview is and why it’s an essential step.

What It Isauction

The preview is usually held a few days before the auction. It is an opportunity for you to look at each of the items for sale, completely free of charge. You may be able to study and even handle the items more closely. If you have any questions about the item, you can ask the staff members there.

Bring a camera, flashlight, magnifying glass, and a notebook. You can make a note of the items you’re interested in, and ask if you can take photographs. After you are finished at the preview, you can go home and do research on the value of these items.

Why You Should Go

The process of the auction itself goes by quickly. You’ll get a catalog with information about each of the items, but you likely won’t have the time to look through it closely. By attending the preview, you’ll know exactly what you’re interested in buying and how much you’re willing to pay. You can focus on bidding, so you won’t miss out on an item you want or risk overbidding for something above its value. Once you’ve bid on something and the auctioneer says, “SOLD!”, you are required to buy it.
