Homeowners should do a water well test once a year, or as soon as they notice any change in their water. It’s worth knowing that the water you and your family are consuming is safe since harmful bacteria and other contaminants can make their way into your water supply. Follow the tips below to make the most of your water testing.

3 Tips for Water Testing

1. When to Test

water testingProfessionals recommend having your well tested every spring. There are times you may want to have additional water testing done. This includes when you repair or replace any part in the system, or if you notice a change in your water quality, such as color, taste, or odor. You’ll also want to conduct testing if there have been any external problems near your well, such as flooding, construction, or earthquakes.

2. How to Test

Though there are home tests you can do yourself, it’s recommended that you have a professional conduct your testing. They will be able to provide a more thorough and accurate test. They can then walk you through the results and take any action necessary to purify your water.

3. What to Test For

You should test for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH levels. Total coliform is found in livestock’s digestive systems, soil, plants, and surface water. A high count means that there is likely other harmful viruses or parasites present. Nitrate in high levels can make people ill, and often comes from animal waste, septic systems, fertilizers, and agricultural runoff. The pH should be neutral. Dangerously low or high levels can damage your pipes and leach harmful amounts of heavy metals into the water.
