Vinyl and fiberglass are two of the most popular materials for windows in modern homes, due to the many benefits that each provides. One is not universally superior to the other; they each have their own qualities that make them desirable. Understand the benefits and drawbacks of each to decide which is right for your home.

Vinyl Windows

Pros

Vinyl is one of the most affordable materials out there. These windows will cost you about half of a wood frame. They never need to be painted or sealed, which makes maintenance easy. Cleaning them is as simple as hosing them down or sponging them off with warm water. This material will not rot or get infested with termites or ants, like wood will. They are energy-efficient windows due to their honeycomb structure that traps air.

Cons

Though vinyl is more affordable to install, it will not last as long as fiberglass does. The seals will fail after some time due to the expansion and contraction with temperature changes, causing the glass to condensate, fog, and become less efficient. Fiberglass is generally expected to have a lifespan around 30 to 40 percent longer than vinyl.

Fiberglass Windows

windowsPros

Fiberglass is a solid yet lightweight material. This composition means that they are easy to install and will stay in good condition for up to 50 years. The elements, temperature changes, and sun exposure will not wear them down the way that vinyl does. They can be left the original color or painted if you want to change your curb appeal. This material is eco-friendly since it is made of mostly recycled glass and is highly insulative.

Cons

Fiberglass is cheaper than wood but costs more to install than vinyl. The price difference can add up when you’re installing windows for the entire home. Though you can choose whether or not to paint them, most homeowners find that they prefer to paint them for preservation. The underlying fiberglass material will fade in sunlight, making the windows look old unless they are painted.
